Federation of Children's Book Group.
The Federation of Children's Book Groups was the brainchild of Anne Wood, originator of "The Teletubbies", over 30 years ago. The Federation's main role is to act as the umbrella organisation for local autonomous Children's Book Groups all around the UK. The Book Groups organise a variety of activities in their localities, often in conjunction with, or in support of, their local schools and libraries. These may include bringing authors and illustrators to schools, story-telling sessions, and other book-related activities for children. The Federation produces a regular Newsletter and numerous specialised booklists. Also, it organises National Share-A-Story Month each year in May, holds an Annual Conference in the Spring, and coordinates The Red House Children's Book Award.

Readability - Confident Children, literate for life.
Many children need one-to-one support to face a book with confidence. Without individual help children who find reading difficult may lack self-esteem and their behaviour and performance in class can deteriorate as they struggle to keep up with their classmates. This is a key reasons that TimeBank, the volunteering charity and Volunteer Reading Help are supporting StoryQuest 2004. The festival run by Arts and Kids brings authors, storytellers and poets together to provide a type of rock concert tour of stories, reaching almost 13,000 10-12 year olds with much additional material for teachers, parents and children available online. Encouraging children to enjoy reading creates a wealth of confidence and raises self-esteem.

Readability is a project managed in partnership by TimeBank and Volunteer Reading Help, which aims to bring together volunteers and children in primary schools to develop new reading skills and increase confidence. With as little as one hour involvement per week you could make a real impact on a child's life. Volunteers will be trained, placed and supported by Volunteer Reading Help, working with the same child each week.

A recent survey found that 77% of children supported by Volunteer Reading Help showed an outstanding improvement in reading ability and 82% in confidence.

If you would like to find out more about Readabilty and register as a volunteer reading helper then visit the TimeBank website by clicking here.
